The Pirate Bay (TPB) is the oldest and most famous public torrent site in the world. Online since 2003, it has survived police raids, a criminal trial, domain seizures and countless blocks, and it is still the first name most people think of when they hear “torrent”. It is free, needs no account and has an enormous catalog – but it is also one of the sites where you need to be most careful.

What is The Pirate Bay?

TPB was started in 2003 by the Swedish group Piratbyrån. In 2006 Swedish police raided its servers, and the site was back online three days later; in 2009 its founders were convicted of assisting copyright infringement. Since then it has changed domains several times, and since 2012 it offers magnet links instead of .torrent files for most uploads. Anyone can browse and download without registering.

What can you find on The Pirate Bay?

Practically everything: movies, TV shows, music, games, software, ebooks and more, uploaded by users from all over the world. The catalog is huge, but quality varies a lot. Old and niche uploads often have few or no seeders, and the same title can appear dozens of times in different versions – some good, some fake.

Pirate Bay safety: ads, fake torrents and malware

This is TPB’s weak spot. The site is funded by aggressive advertising, including popups, redirects and adult banners, so an ad blocker is essential. Uploads are not moderated the way they are on private trackers, which means fake and malicious torrents do show up – especially for new movies, games and software. A few rules keep you safe:

  • Prefer uploads from users with a skull badge (VIP or trusted uploaders) and read the comments before downloading.
  • Check the file list: a movie should not contain an .exe, .scr or .zip with a password.
  • Never install a “codec”, “player” or “downloader” a torrent or popup asks for.
  • Scan downloaded games and software before running them.

Why The Pirate Bay won’t open

TPB is blocked by internet providers in many countries, including much of Europe, and it also has outages of its own. If the site does not load, it may be a block in your country rather than the site being down. Our Pirate Bay status page checks the official domain automatically and shows whether it is up for us right now.

Pirate Bay proxies and mirrors: be careful

Because of the blocks, there are hundreds of “Pirate Bay proxy” and “mirror” sites. Many are not run by TPB at all: they copy its look and add extra ads, fake download buttons or malware. If the official domain is blocked where you live, a VPN is a safer way to reach it than a random proxy from a search result.

Do you need a VPN for The Pirate Bay?

On a public torrent site your IP address is visible to everyone in the swarm, including copyright monitoring companies. In many countries that can lead to warning letters or fines. A VPN that allows torrenting, with a kill switch turned on, hides your IP and also gets you past most ISP blocks.

Pirate Bay alternatives

If TPB is down or a torrent has no seeders, our list of Pirate Bay alternatives ranks other torrent sites by score – including private trackers, which are cleaner and faster if you can get in.

Verdict

The Pirate Bay is a legend with a gigantic catalog and no sign-up, and it is still useful for finding almost anything. But heavy ads, unmoderated uploads and fake proxies make it one of the riskier places on the map: use an ad blocker and a VPN, stick to trusted uploaders, and check the comments before you download.

The good

  • Huge catalog covering almost everything
  • No account needed to browse and download
  • Magnet links: nothing to download from the site itself
  • Skull badges help spot trusted uploaders
  • Online since 2003, despite raids and blocks

The bad

  • Aggressive ads, popups and redirects
  • Unmoderated uploads: fake and malicious torrents exist
  • Blocked by ISPs in many countries
  • Hundreds of fake proxy sites copying it
  • Many old uploads have few or no seeders

⚓ Captain's verdict 6.8
